Shakhrisabz City:
Shakhrisabz
Shakhrisabz is a small town situated 160 km far from Samarkand. The town is the birthplace of Tamer-lane it is located in a valley surrounded by foothills of Pamir Mountains.Tamer-lane was born on the 9th of May 1336 in the aristocratic family in a small village 13 km away from the ancient town Kesh. Later Tamer-lane gave a new name to the town - Shakhrisabz - meaning "green town". There are not so many monuments in Shakhrisabz, as in other places of Uzbekistan, but all of them are of great historical importance. Tamer-lane erected his summer residence Ak-Saray Palace there. It was a huge splendid palace, full of grandeur as his other palaces in Samarkand. Today there is almost nothing left from this grand palace except two huge walls partly decorated with blue, white and gold mosaic tiling, that once were the parts of gigantic entrance. It took almost a quarter of a century to construct the palace, but now we can only try to imagine its former beauty and grandeur. There are also several mosques built by Ulughbek, Tamer-lane's grandson. There is also the mausoleum of Sheikh Shamseddin Kulyal, spiritual teacher of Tamer-lane. Some historians suppose that Tamer-lane's father is also buried there in the mausoleum. Behind the mausoleum there is the crypt of Tamer-lane. Taking several steps down you get into a small stone room decorated only with quotations of Koran and with biographical inscriptions of Tamer-lane.
